December 2007 No billboards In an effort to clean up the ‘cityscape’, São Paulo’s mayor Gilberto Kassab created a law banning all outdoor advertising. Slowly but surely outdoor advertising is being erased from the city’s 10,000 or so billboards. Other cities such as Buenos Aires (below), and Rio are considering similar plans. Can this trend catch on? Will Clear Channel Outdoor (one of the largest outdoor advertising companies) and other outdoor-focused agencies go into legal overdrive and political lobbying to ensure their business space and business model is protected?
