February 2008 Cold Seeds Norway has funded the €5.4m construction of a vault built by the Global Crop Diversity Trust to safeguard seed samples of global food crops from any future 'doomsday' disaster. The seeds will be keep at -18°C on the island of Svalbard, almost a thousand kilometres north of Norway's northern tip. It is claimed that Norway is funding this activity "as a service to the world community". Is this type of social service integral to the 'Norway' brand? Is the gesture genuine or more a PR stunt? We must hope for the former...
